The event will start with a brief press conference led by our coalition partners, Every Child NC. If possible, please arrive 5-10 minutes early to be in position for the 9am Every Child NC coalition press conference as the Vigil will start immediately afterwards, and we would love to have a strong presence standing behind the press conference speakers for visual support.

PARKING

We recommend parking in the Wilmington Street deck (117 S. Wilmington Street) or in the pay lot at the corner of Jones and Wilmington Streets (enter from Jones Street).

August 31, 2022 is the start of the next case for Leandro at the NC Supreme Court for the State’s compliance with the Leandro Plan.

The plan is a court-ordered schedule of funding and policy measures to ensure NC public schools are meeting the state constitution’s minimum standard of a “sound basic education” for every child.

The Leandro case was filed in 1994, and for decades, children around the state have been deprived of the educational resources they are owed.

We are gathering

    • to lament the loss of support services and learning opportunities that would have otherwise benefitted millions of children – for each of the 28 years since the Leandro case began.
    • to recognize conditions in public schools are worse now than they were when Leandro began in 1994
    • to call on the State Legislature to fulfill its constitutional and moral duties to the children of North Carolina – to give every student what they need to succeed and flourish at school.

This event is Sponsored by Pastors for NC Children as part of the Every Child NC Coalition’s Leandro Week of Action.

The Untold Story of the North Carolina Constitution
Monday, August 8, 2022 at 7:00 PM | RSVP for Free Tickets

In 1868, a multiracial coalition of North Carolina legislators wrote into our state’s constitution that all citizens have the right to an education — a radical notion at its time. The story of the coalition is largely untold. North Carolina is the only state which outlines public education as a right for all citizens in its constitution. We have never as a state delivered on the promise those representatives made in the constitution. But, the value that all citizens have a right to an education is ours, North Carolinians. And it is ours because of that brave moment in history.

Faith Communities and the Fight for Education Equity in NC
Monday, August 22, 2022 at 7:00 PM | RSVP for Free Tickets

What can North Carolina faith leaders tell us about education equity? What does faith call us to do in the fight for education rights for all? In this short documentary, we travel across the state to discuss with faith leaders how education equity is part of our collective justice. We explore how faith impacts both the messages we hear and how we understand them as North Carolina communities work to build an inclusive state. (PNCC is proud to have helped with this video!)

What’s Possible: Winston-Salem Localizes Leandro
Monday, August 29, 2022 at 7:00 PM | RSVP for Free Tickets
In Winston-Salem, community members are leveraging the Leandro case to build grassroots power. Kellie Easton and fellow advocates successfully convinced the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System (WSFCS) to invest in a mentor program. The program is changing the way that student groups made most vulnerable are interacting with WSFCS. This short documentary models how North Carolina education advocates can use Leandro to develop more equitable local school budgets.
