People of Faith for Public Schools and Pastors for NC Children invite you to join us at the NC Legislature on Tuesday, April 21st for a Public Education Advocacy Day. This is on collaboration with Every Child NC and Red Wine & Blue’s Education Team. We will be gathering at Edenton Street United Methodist Church’s Kerr Hall in the morning and walking over to the NC General Assembly together. ESUMC is located at 228 W. Edenton Street, Raleigh, NC 27603 and the NC Legislature is located at 16 W. Jones Street. It’s an easy 1 block walk from the church to the Legislature. The Church facility is fully handicap accessible. Spanish interpretation will be provided.

- Please note: Appointments are being arranged through Red Wine and Blue as available from Legislators. If you do not have an appointment, it is still possible to stop by offices and deliver materials to them. We will provide materials and training on how to do this!

Two Training Call opportunities will be provided on April 14th on zoom to go over logistics and details ahead of the event. The calls will be the same so attend whichever fits your schedule. They will be at noon and 7pm. Zoom links will be provided to those who register.
Why is our Advocacy Needed NOW?
- April 21, 2026 is the first official day back for the NC Legislature for the 2026 “Short Session” and we want to remind them we are watching their actions on behalf of the children across NC to ensure they have a fully funded public school system.
- November’s elections are coming, and we will remember what they do to support children’s thriving NOW in the short session! WE ARE TIRED OF WAITING!
- NC is ranked 50th in the country in funding effort (the amount our state spends on education compared to our State’s GDP–the most fair wait to measure funding)
- NC Per Pupil Spending is ranked 49th in the country at $12,193 ($5,660 behind the national average of $17,853)
- NC Average Teacher Pay is $58,292 which ranks 43rd in the country
- NC has yet to pass a 2025-26 Biennium Budget (The only state in the nation without one!)
- Thus no teacher raises, no increases to per pupil spending or any other increases that are so disparately needed!
- NC has experienced a 13% loss of childcare programs since 2019 and the lists of children who need childcare continues to grow
- Quality, affordable childcare is essential to many working families and provides early learning opportunities that help children Birth-Kindergarten be ready to learn in school
- Governor Stein, State Superintendent Green, and leaders of the NC Legislature announced in March they have created a bipartisan “Blue Ribbon Commission” to study public education
- YET the Leandro Decision & Comprehensive Remedial Plan are in place and just NEED TO BE FULLY IMPLEMENTED instead of studying the issue more. #JusticeDelayedIsJusticeDenied
- State Corporate Tax Cuts are set to go to 0% by 2030 to deprive the state of much needed funding for public education and other needs in a growing state
- The Legislature is also looking to limit property taxes which would hurt local county’s abilities to fund school building and buses and infrastructure.
- We need smart property tax relief not limits that harm public schools and are forcing some districts to close needed schools.
- NC has dramatically expanded the Private School Voucher program that gives public tax money to private schools that are not required to serve every child and are not required to submit to the same accountability that public schools do.
- In 2024-25, NC spent $432.2 Million on private school vouchers and is expected to spend $855 Million annually on vouchers by 2033 while continuing to intentionally underfund public schools

¿Por qué es necesario abogar AHORA?
- El 21 de abril de 2026 es el primer día oficial de regreso de la Legislatura de Carolina del Norte para la “Sesión Corta” de 2026 y queremos recordarles que estamos observando sus acciones en nombre de los niños en todo NC para asegurar que tengan un sistema de escuelas públicas completamente financiado.
- Las elecciones de noviembre se acercan, y recordaremos lo que hagan para apoyar el bienestar de los niños AHORA durante la sesión corta. ¡ESTAMOS CANSADOS DE ESPERAR!
- NC está en el puesto 50 en el país en esfuerzo de financiamiento (la cantidad que nuestro estado gasta en educación comparado con el PIB del estado—la forma más justa de medir el financiamiento)
- El gasto por estudiante en NC está en el puesto 49 en el país con $12,193 ($5,660 por debajo del promedio nacional de $17,853)
