Countering Christian Nationalism in Public Schools

and Promoting Religious Freedom

Pastors for NC Children’s (PNCC) new vision statement (adopted 3/2026) states: “For people and communities of faith across North Carolina to be mobilized in partnership with local public schools to provide support and resources while advocating for a fully resourced education system grounded in equity and religious freedom to ensure all children thrive.”

This revised vision statement added the line about religious freedom because so many of the threats to public education are connected to the rise of Christian Nationalism, which is a direct threat to religious freedom and liberty. We work closely with the Baptist Joint Committee For Religious Liberty (BJC) and Americans United for the Separation of Church and State (AU) to confront issues of religious freedom in public schools. PNCC has been supporting Christians Against Christian Nationalism (CACN), a project of BJC, for a few years, and we encourage anyone interested in this work to signup for more info on organizing with CACN in NC

PNCC believes that all children, regardless of their religious background or no religious background, should feel safe and welcome to attend their local public school. We also believe that promoting personal religious views or proselytizing by anyone of any sort has no place in public schools.  When faith communities partner with local public schools, it is to SHOW LOVE to our neighbors, NEVER to recruit for our faith communities. PNCC maintains the belief in a high wall of separation of church and state.
